Running shoe and dress shoe widths use the same letters but have different meanings.  Running shoes skip every other letter. The letters A, C, and E are not used in running shoes. 

 

Mens and womens widths also use the same letters but the scale is shifted one over.  Ex. A women’s wide width is equivalent to a men’s medium width because both are “D” widths.
